Mindfulness with Tammy
We'll go straight to the source for this one:
"Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally. It's about knowing what is on your mind." ~ Jon Kabat-Zinn, creator of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was created by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979. Since that time, mindfulness has become a global movement, implemented in everything from parenting and pain management to sports psychology and educational systems. But mindfulness is much more than the buzzword of the moment. A vast amount of research shows that mindfulness practice can improve mental, physical and emotional well-being. In New Zealand, this research has resulted in a programme backed by the Ministry of Education for implementation in schools called Pause, Breathe, Smile (find out more here).
Why are mindfulness practices such a powerful tool for well-being?
We lead busy, busy lives. Much of our day is spent thinking about what we need to do or what we have done. In other words, we are often "living" in the past or the future rather than attentive to what is happening right here, right now. Constant thought about the past or the future is stressful and overwhelming, leaving us feeling emotionally, mentally and physically exhausted. And we are missing what is actually happening in each moment of our lives. However, when we skillfully bring our attention to each moment we gain clarity, centeredness and abiding calm.
Feeling like you don't have enough time to add one more thing to your day?
Good news! Mindfulness practice isn't about adding yet another item to your "to do" list. Mindfulness is about bringing awareness to what you are already doing. I will work with your daily routine, helping you intentionally pay attention, on purpose, in the present moments of your unique life, whether you are washing the dishes, driving your car, eating a meal or communicating with a friend. By becoming more aware of what is happening right now we relish feelings of joy and happiness while bringing clarity to areas that may not be working so well. Mindful practices foster engaged and connected lifestyles, increasing resilience and opportunities to relish joy and happiness. In short, we flourish.
