KIA ORA
Originally from the United States, I moved to beautiful Fiordland in 2014, making a home in Te Anau.
Solution-Focused therapy and Focused Acceptance Commitment Therapy (fACT) form the foundation of my counselling practice. These are complemented by experience in the field of education, as well as contemplative studies. I provide a safe and confidential counselling space for exploring personal experiences with understanding and acceptance. Together, we'll discover individual strengths and resources, and create personal solutions.
I am a member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors and received a Master of Counselling degree from University of Canterbury in the Master of Counselling Programme.
I currently work in two roles within the Fiordland region: (1) health improvement practitioner (HIP); (2) brief intervention clinician. HIPs offer 25-30 minute sessions using the fACT model, designed to create a unique plan that will make a difference for you. If you are enrolled in Fiordland Medical Practice, you can make an appointment with me by calling (03) 249-7007. This service is free of charge.
Brief intervention clinician services offer up to 5 sessions of counselling and require a referral from your GP. During these sessions we will collaborate to understand your unique circumstances and create a plan for change. This service is free of charge with a doctor's referral.

SOLUTION FOCUSED BRIEF THERAPY
Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a counselling approach developed in the United States by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg in the 1970s.
SFBT follows three main tenets:
1. If it isn't broken, don't fix it
2. If it works, do more of it
3. If it doesn't work, do something different
The solution-focused approach is active, specific, and collaborative. We will work together to figure out what works as a skillful response to your experience. Our time together will focus on moving towards your therapy goals and identifying the strengths and resources you are already have. This way of working in therapy is not open-ended; rather therapy comes to a natural close when goals are realised. Often, but not always, this type of therapy requires fewer sessions.

FOCUSED ACCEPTANCE COMMITMENT THERAPY (fACT)
Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) was developed in the United States by Stephen C. Hayes in 1982. Russ Harris has also significantly contributed to the development of ACT resources. ACT focuses on developing awareness of thoughts and feelings, and responding skilfully by engaging in valued behaviour. fACT is a brief version of ACT.
fACT has 3 main pillars:
1. Openness
2. Awareness
3. Engagement
fACT is active and collaborative. We will work together to identify areas importance to you, distinguish between thoughts and emotions, and engage in meaningful behaviour through valued action. The focus of each session will be discovering what is workable for you in your unique life circumstances.
